Orthodontics

A straight set of teeth does not only look great, but it also helps enhance your oral health.

If your teeth align properly, you can prevent bite and speech issues. You can also give your mouth a better clean. On the other hand, if your teeth don’t fit together, this can result in oral health issues over time.

What is Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic treatment corrects teeth alignment to improve their appearance and function. Braces and other appliances apply gentle pressure to the teeth to move them to their right position.

How your teeth align will impact your bite. Ideally, the top and bottom teeth should fit together. If they don't, it will be harder to chew food properly. The teeth may also wear prematurely as they are forced to work harder.

When teeth are crowded or misaligned, it will be tougher to keep them clean. Protruding teeth also break and chip more easily. If these issues are corrected through orthodontic treatments, your oral health will also improve.

Who Can Receive Orthodontic Treatments?

Orthodontic treatments are not only for teens. The teeth can be moved and improved regardless of your age. Don't feel embarrassed to ask your dentist or orthodontist about available options to correct the alignment of your teeth.

It may be helpful, however, to start the treatment as early as possible. We recommend bringing your child in for an orthodontic screening so we can examine their bite. Orthodontic treatment can be performed even before the adult teeth come in to prevent issues.

How Long Will the Treatment Last?

The duration depends on the severity of the issue, your age, and the type of orthodontic treatment used. You will need to visit your dentist or orthodontist regularly to track the progress of your treatment. Your cooperation will also affect how long the treatment will last.

Self-Ligating Orthodontic Braces

Self-ligating orthodontic braces look like traditional braces, but they do not use wires and elastics. This technique uses brackets with special clips or sort of a trapdoor. The brackets apply pressure on the archwire to move the teeth. Self-ligating braces can be used to correct complex bite issues and the installation process is similar to conventional braces. The treatment can take an average of 2 years. When you come in for a consultation, we'll be able to give you a better idea of how long your treatment will likely take.

Ceramic Orthodontic Braces

Ceramic braces are a common alternative to metal braces due to their appearance. Instead of metal, clear ceramic is used, making the appliance less noticeable. The brackets can be customized to match the natural shade of your teeth. They work the same as traditional braces. However, ceramic brackets are more brittle than metal brackets. They may also pick up stains when not cared for properly.

Invisalign / Clear Aligners

This orthodontic option helps you perfect your smile without people noticing it. Instead of brackets, it uses customized plastic aligners that are worn over the teeth. The aligner is replaced periodically to move the teeth to their desired position. Invisalign is removable, making it a convenient option. However, It may not be applicable for severe misalignment.
