From first checkups to cleanings, exams, and everything in between, our team works with families to make dental care simple, positive, and stress-free.
We’ve created an experience that’s made for kids, from shows to watch in the chair to small take-home prizes. But more than that, we focus on communication, consistency, and care that grows with your child—because what they learn now can shape their oral health for years to come.

When Should Your Child Visit the Dentist?
We recommend bringing your child for their first dental visit 6 months after their first tooth appears, or by their first birthday. If your child is older and hasn’t been to the dentist yet, don’t worry—it’s never too late to start.
Early dental care helps:
- Prevent tooth decay and cavities
- Establish lifelong oral hygiene habits
- Reduce dental anxiety and fear
- Lower overall dental costs for your family
What to Expect at Your
Child’s First Exam
Our goal is to make every visit feel relaxed and fun. During their first appointment, your child will:
- Meet our friendly dental team
- Go for a ride in the dental chair
- Watch a show while we gently examine their teeth and gums
- Receive tips for brushing and flossing at home
- Choose a small toy to take home
We take the time to earn your child’s trust and explain everything in kid-friendly language so they feel at ease.
Brushing & Flossing
Tips for Kids
As your child grows, their dental routine will change. We’ll teach you how to:
- Brush their teeth effectively, even when they’re wiggly
- Choose the right toothbrush and toothpaste
- Make flossing easier
- Encourage healthy routines with age-appropriate techniques
We believe that parents are partners in oral health, and we’re always happy to answer your questions.
Cavities & Tooth Decay:
What You Should Know
Tooth decay is one of the most common childhood health issues—but it’s also one of the most preventable. Signs your child may have a cavity include:
- Tooth sensitivity or discomfort
- Visible brown or black spots
- Trouble chewing
If we detect a cavity, we’ll carefully remove the decay and place a tooth-coloured filling to protect the tooth. If the tooth is too damaged to save, we may recommend extracting the baby tooth and using a space maintainer to preserve the alignment for your future adult teeth.
Orthodontics: Monitoring
Growth & Development
Not every child will need braces, but early evaluations are key to identifying issues before they become serious.
We’ll monitor for:
- Crooked or crowded teeth
- Bite problems (overbite, underbite)
- Jaw growth and spacing
- Thumb sucking or other oral habits
If orthodontic treatment is needed, we offer a range of options, including traditional braces and clear aligners, and may refer to an orthodontist for complex cases.
Sealants & Fluoride:
Extra Protection for Little Teeth
Some teeth, especially molars, can be hard to clean. That’s where sealants and fluoride treatments come in:
- Sealants are thin coatings that protect the grooves of the back teeth.
- Fluoride treatments help strengthen enamel and prevent decay.
These simple treatments offer added protection, especially for kids prone to cavities.
Dental Extractions for Kids
Sometimes a baby tooth needs to be removed due to:
- Severe decay or infection
- Overcrowding
- Orthodontic planning
We only recommend extractions when absolutely necessary and always prioritize your child’s comfort. Sedation options are also available for anxious children.
Your Child’s Comfort Is Our Priority
Every child is different, that’s why we tailor each visit to their unique personality and comfort level. Whether it’s their first exam, a routine cleaning, or a filling, our team works hard to make your child’s experience a positive one.
If needed, we can break treatments into shorter visits to help kids stay comfortable. Give your child the gift of a healthy smile for life. Schedule their first dental exam with Chinook Village Dental today—we’ll help make it a fun and memorable experience for both of you.
